STOPzilla Kills Ads And Spyware Dead
By Michael Sweet, Smart Computing Magazine

Most people hate telemarketing calls and spam email messages be-cause they're disruptive and annoying. Many computer users feel the same way about pop-up and pop-under ads, those online banner beauties that appear out of nowhere when you're surfing the Web. If you want to stop the pop-up barrage, you're going to need a little help. STOPzilla not only kills pop-ups dead, but it also includes a feature to disable adware and spyware programs, the real source of most pop-up ads, that can sneak into your PC.
Many users accidentally install adware and spyware when they download free programs from the Web. The adware and spyware code is included with the free program, and when you install the program, you install the adware. STOPzilla knows how adware and spyware operate. When such programs try to download or serve ads on your PC, STOPzilla will detect the miscreants and disable them.
You don't have to do a thing to configure or run the anti-adware/spyware feature. It happens automatically, without the user even knowing it. We intentionally downloaded adware and found that the program kept the adware from working. Our only complaint is that we'd like to see STOPzilla incorporate a logbook to let users know when spyware has been detected and disabled.
Adware and spyware aren't the only sources of pop-up ads. Some ads are generated when you visit a specific Web site. STOPzilla stops these ads in their tracks, as well. It detects them before they have a chance to appear on your screen. You can see which pop-up ads STOPzilla has blocked by opening the Black List screen. You can remove select pop-up ads from the Black List if you want to or clear the entire screen.
There aren't many other configuration options available in STOPzilla. You can choose to start STOPzilla when the PC starts. STOPzilla can also display a warning message and play an alarm when it detects a pop-up ad. Finally, you can choose to automatically add all detected pop-ups to the Black List.
STOPzilla works well and is extremely easy to use, which is an excellent combination in any program. Some users may balk at the software's $29.99 price, however, especially as some services are offering their own free pop-up blockers. But the freebies might not block adware, which is often the real root of the pop-up problem.
